Datagrid is developing a large-scale data centre park at Makarewa.
The project will bring new digital infrastructure and investment to Southland, with opportunities for local businesses, employment, skills development and future technology growth. Data centres provide the infrastructure needed to support digital services, cloud computing, high-performance computing and AI.
Southland is well suited to a development of this type because of its cool climate, access to electricity infrastructure, available land and growing international digital connectivity. The cooler climate can also help reduce the energy and water needed for cooling.
The Makarewa project will be developed in stages, with infrastructure and data centre capacity added progressively over time. Current works are focused on preparing the site, including earthworks, road upgrades, access routes, building platforms, bunding and landscaping. As the project progresses, we’ll continue to share more information about construction activity, future stages and the opportunities the development can create for Southland.
Key project information
Power
Data centres require significant electricity, and Datagrid is working with the relevant electricity organisations on how the Makarewa project will connect to and be supplied from the electricity system. More information will be shared as those arrangements are confirmed.
Water
Southland’s high rainfall means the project is expected to meet most of its water needs from captured rainwater, reducing reliance on other sources. The consent allows for a maximum take if needed, but that doesn’t mean Datagrid will use that amount in normal operations.
Wetland and environment
The Taylor Road Wetland is an important environmental feature of the site. The project includes measures to manage effects on the wetland, along with enhancement, native planting and ongoing monitoring.
Traffic and roads
Construction traffic will be actively managed throughout the development. Road upgrades and a dedicated construction access route form part of the project, with the aim of reducing heavy vehicle movements through residential areas where possible.
Noise and visual effects
The development includes measures to help manage noise and visual effects. These include equipment placement, site layout, bunding, landscaping and planting.
How the project is being consented
Different parts of the Makarewa development are covered by different resource consents.
Environment Southland is responsible for regional consent matters, while Southland District Council is responsible for land-use consent. Invercargill City Council have also issued consents related to the Tasman Ring cable.
Datagrid is required to comply with the conditions of those consents and the associated management plans as the project progresses.
We’ll continue to share information about the consenting process and any key requirements that are relevant to the community.
